Discussion with the Hostile Environment / Liminal research group & guest speakers - Wednesday 6 September - 7pm @Maldusa (Via degli Schioppettieri 23)

Drawing from projects undertaken across various borderzones (Iran-Pakistan, Mexico-US, northern Niger), the event will challenge state-centred narratives about smuggling, anchoring smuggling practices within wider infrastructure of (im-)mobility and questioning who and what is smuggling and being smuggled. It will also examine how anti-smuggling campaigns have become a powerful justification for the ongoing criminalisation of people on the move and those acting in solidarity with them, as well as local residents marginalised by central state authorities and Western institutions.
