Volunteering

If you are interested in joining us at the Maldusa station in Lampedusa, here are some requirements and skills that we deem important for volunteering with us:

  • Language: It is mandatory to be proficient enough in Italian. Speaking English or French is also recommended. Knowing a non-colonial langage will be considered a bonus.

  • Context knowledge: Understanding the central Mediterranean sea dynamics or overall border dynamics is appreciated; especially if it is based on a previous experience within an organization of the civil fleet (CivilMRCC) or an organization actively dealing with migration and borders.

  • Intersectionality: We are obviously looking for someone aligned with our vision about free movement and solidarity but we would also like our volunteers to be aware of other topics such as decolonization, antiracism and transfemminism.

  • Driving licence: It is needed to be able to drive a car or, at least, to know how to ride a bike.

  • Hard skills: the following skills are not all required

*Communication: social media, writing articles for Maldusa blog...

*Event organization: talks, exhibitions...

*Knowledge about international law

*Basic understanding of data analysis and numbers (budget)

  • Soft skills:

*Autonomy and ability to liaise with groups and individuals on the island and at the pier with people on the move

*Flexibility and adaptability to our context which can vary and to our shared living spaces (house, island)

  • Disponibilità: A minimum of one month is required to ensure a meaningful learning experience within our cross-border solidarity community..

If you would like to actively contribute to an important cause, without the 'white saviour' syndrome, please contact us for more information. However, please note that we receive many requests whereas our capacities are limited, so even though we try to respond to everyone, if you do not receive a reply, it means that we do not have any availability at the moment.
